Well...this week is almost over. It seemed to go by so slow but that's because my school has suffered a tragic loss. One of our barn members died this Monday and I didn't find out until lunch. It was hard to lose a classmate and family member at the barn. See At the barn everyone feels like a part of a large family since we work closely together to get tasks done and keep the barn looking nice. I didn't know her well only from a couple of classes but it was still very upsetting to hear that the barn and school has lost such a great student and friend. Going on now seems so hard knowing that she will never graduate and finish her freshman year. Things now later in the week are starting to get back to normal but at the barn everything is still very quiet and I'm sure it will be for a while. Everyone just can't believe that she is gone and it's hard to accept because you never think that anything like that will ever happen but it does. I'm sorry for her family and friends because I'm sure if I got to know her better she would make a very special friend with her upbeat personality.

Well let's see....so far things are going well. Back into the routine of classes after the fun family weekend. Can't wait to go home again over Thanksgiving break. I sure will miss Smoke though. He's worrying me cause I was grooming one day and found some cysts on his cinch area. I was told that if they grew then they'd have to be removed. I'm hoping they aren't cancerous because if they are I'd be devestated. I lost one pet to cancer and I'm hoping I won't lose Smoke to cancer too. :.( I would be so depressed. School is going good. Next semester will be really busy though. I can't believe how many credit hours I'm taking. I'm gonna be going from 6 am to 3 pm straight. Going from the barn to the other side of campus all day. How tired I'll be. Well not much more is going on.

Well I know I havne't bogged in a while so I'm gonna now before brunch.I have the "real" picture of smoke my horse I'm taking care of. He's such a sweetheart. Things here have been kind of busy with the cannonization coming up and all. I can't believe that Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is going to go down in History because of Saint Mother Theodore Guerin. It's so exciting. Things here for me are going good. I get to register for classes on Tuesday. I'm gonna sign up for some riding classes to fill up the 16 credits that I need. I can't believe that I'm 19 now. I feel so old. lol. My roommate is good we are getting along so well. The whole roommate situation was the thing that worried me the most because I wasn't sure how we were going to get along. Well there is a horse show going on this weekend and it's a Western show. I'm not in it because of the cost. I heard the cost and my mind made up it's mind right there. For me the cost was too much. For the outfit alone I heard that it could cost me between $600-$1200 and it was just too much. So I joined Chorale instead. And I love it. I wanted so much to be on the team but I wouldn't be able to pay for the outfit. For Chorale we have a performance on November 4th for Family Weekend. I can't wait. Well before I begin to write my college story right now I better stop and save some for another day.

Let's see...I got my four week grades back and I was very happy cause I got all A's and B's except one C+ in equine survey. Classes are going alright. I'm very happy with my decision to come to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. I'm having a blast so far. My roommate is great and we are practically attached at the hip. Good News!!! I accepted God last night. I'm so happy I did. My roommate was encouraging me and I was a little skeptical but I got this really relaxed feeling and I got this urge to go through with it and I'm happy i did. Smoke is doing really well and I think that he's realizing who cleans out his stall every morning during the weekdays. It was like he thanked me the other day for letting him out out in the pasture. I was walking back to the barn and something told me to turn around so I did. I saw him take a look at me and when he saw me looking at him he took off around the weather shed and he bucked a few times. It was so funny and cool to see.I really thought it was his way of saying "thank you." I was so happy to see him happy. Well I better go cause brunch is coming up here soon.

Toay is Saturay and I went out to watch one of classmates ride and it was a lot of fun. I got to help her tack up and help give the horse a bath. It was a lot of fun. I miss everyone at the library. I'm planning on taking some sort of riding classes next semester since I couldn't this semester since I already had all the hours I could take. Today all I'm doing is watching movies with my rommate. It's a lot of fun. Not much more to say except I can't wait to come home the dya after my birthday for fall break!! I guess I better go.

Well toay is Monday and it's Labor Day. I got to see my family yesterday. I was so happy. It was the first time in a month and I really missed them. It was a refresher for what i've missed the most! I can't believe they made the 5 hour trip though. I thought I was going to miss the Grandpa visit. But he wanted to see me so they came to SMWC. I miss the work at ND too. I can't wait until October when I can come and visit. If I came to visit I'd probably try for Saturday or Sunday and if not then I will most defiately come in December! A little snow can't keep me away from the Library at ND and the Great people I've worked with!!!!!

I'm so happy!!! I found out who my horse was the other day. His name is Smoke and he's quarter horse gelding. Here's a picture! This is only an example of what color and confirmation he will be. I haven't gotten to meet him in person yet but I will tomorrow. I get to be out at the barn at 4:00 and get to bring him in and get acquainted with him before dinner. Then on Monday I get to be out at the barn at 7:00 and start mucking out his stall. I'm so excited. Then for our fall break it's the day after my B-day!! I turn 19 on the 5th of October. i'm so excited for that too! I better get back to my homework now just wanted to show a picture cause I'm happy with the information that i got about him.

Today is Friday!!!!!! I moved into Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College yesterday. I'm still a little homesick but the girls are making sure that we keep busy so I can take my mind off of it. I had to get up at 2 in the morning to get on the road with my parents so we could be here by 8:30 and still we got here early. It took us about 5 hours to get here and I was getting very anxious about the whole thing on the way down but now that I'm here it sort of feels like home. I've got a meeting at 7:45 before breakfast and I've decided to update my blog before I head downstairs.
So I guess I'll write more when I get to experience more.

Today is another day closer to Thursday and my brother and sister had their first day of school today. My sister was getting all worked up last night afraid that she wasn't going to find her classes and scared that she was going to get lost. With me thier last night to show her the way around I thought helped her to get a feel for the school a little. My brother was taking scuba lessons last night for boy scouts.
Today I got to use my debit card for the first time. Yesterday at Petsmart I tried to use it but I didn't have the right pin number so I went home to look for the number and I found it luckily. phew. So that was exciting. I used it to buy two three drawer storage cases and a hand held iron. I think I have so much stuff now that I feel like I have too much. But you can never have enough right?? I found out my roommate yesterday and I found out that I'm not going to get to talk to or meet her until Thursday. So that will keep my interest for the car ride up. I head down in two days and I'm getting mixed feelings. Part of me wants to stay home and get a job and the other says that I need the education and learning more about horses could be fun. I know what the right choice is and I'm glad I get the chance to try this knowing that I could have not been accepted and gone to another school. I'm glad I got accepted to Saint Mary-of-th-Woods College. I have a little more packing to do so I'll go do that.

Today is Thursday and I have 7 days left. I'm kind of getting nervous because I get a bad case of home sickness and I know that I'll miss my parents. Watching them leave will be the hardest thing ever. I'm sure that once classes start and everthing it will get better.
Yesterday I got to go see my old team play golf. It brought back all the good times on the golf course and felt really good to be back out on the course. My coach came when I was on the second hole and it was soo good to see her again. I've missed her and her coaching so much. The girls didn't have a really good day but there are times when that will happen. My coach said that they all wish that I ws number one again because having one of them be number one instead has put a lot of pressure on the team. And not having her there all the time has put the team in a fluster. I wish so much that I could play on the team again but I know that it's not possible. I just can't wait until next summer when I can go watch them again.

On Thursday evening I was taking a shower and I ended up slipping in the shower. I fell pretty hard and my arm ended outside the shower. I jammed my index and middle finger on my left hand. Today is Monday and they are both still a little swollen and still very sore. :( Anyway today is the last day for work. *Tear* I don't want to leave. I want to stay a little longer but I have to keep getting ready for school which is in 11 days.
I'm going to volunteer at the neuter scooter tomorrow and I'm very excited. It's where volunteers take care of owners cats when they get out of surgery and what we have to do is clip the claws, clean the ears, put drops in their eyes, keep them warm, and make sure the incision isn't bleeding. It's a lot of fun seeing all the different cats and taking care of them.
On Wednesday I get to go watch Clay Girls Golf play a round of golf against a couple of schools. I'm also very excited for that too. Since I played golf for three years. I'm just bummed that my coach won't be there because she has some meetings at her school so she can get ready for the new school year. Anyway maybe I can walk with her daughter or someone else. It will be fun otherwise.

Why my mentor is so Great!

Steve,

You have been a great inspiration this summer for me. I'm glad we got to have lunch together and talk about the library, horses and other things. You have been a great role model for me to encourage me to succeed in my passions and interests. I know that this summer went my fast and I'm planning to keep in touch. I hope that if you chose to be a mentor again next summer you get someone as nice and a good student as I was.
Watching you the other day teaching Tarrez and Julie how to play pool showed me how passionate you are in helping people. I know you've helped me to be more outgoing and to get out there and achieve my goals. I really want to thank you for what you've done and how you've helped me and taught me about being a librarian. I can't thank you enough.

To my Supervisors and Summer Student friends,
I wanted to say thank you for all you patients and willingness to teach me how to do the different things that librarians do. I know how hard it is to teach a new person how to do things especially when your not feeling your best or you having a bad day. I'm really glad I got to work with all of you and got to know you. It's been a real pleasure to spend the hours with you helping you get things done. My reward out of all of this isn't really the money but to see the smiles on your faces when I can help you in anyway that I can whether it's stuffing pamphlets, filing michrofiche, stamping and stripping books, binding pamphlets, cleaning shelves, etc. One of my passions is helping people and I really loved to help out all of you this summer. It has truly been the best summer I've ever had.

Let's see... today the group went to La Esperanza for lunch and then we made our way over to the recreation center for some pool and ping pong. Steve was being so helpful and was such a great teacher today teaching Tarrez and Julie how to play pool. We all had such a great time together. I just can't believe the summer is almost over. It went by so fast and in my perspective I wish that we could work longer. Later today after we got done with our little outting four of us went to reference and helped put inserts into the pamphlets and put them in piles. Cheri and I also went and took the 2200+ over to the proper building. I'll tell you it was so HOT and HUMID that you could easily get dehydrated if you don't drink a lot of water or other type of fluids. It just drained our energy on the way there and back. Tomorrow we have Laura's picnic and that will also be a lot of fun. Can't wait!!

Yesterday my sister and I went for a jog and I found out that I am really out of shape. I had to start and stop about three times. So I guess that means I have to get out more often to rebuild up my stamina. Especially if I want a lot to ride my horse down in college.
Friday I got a call from my parents about the road blockage. They asked me how they were supposed to get to the library circle and I didn't know at the time but luckily I'm working with helpful people and I was told that there was a way to get to the library circle so I'll have let my parents know.
Today I finally finished my website. I really finished it this time. Last time I didn't realize I had to put my sources on my website so I finally got that done this morning. So I'll be ready for the presentation of Friday. I can't wait until Wednesday and Thursday too. I still can't get over the feeling of taking a couple hours off work to go to lunch and play ping pong though cause I'm more of a rule book type of person so I admit it will feel wierd but we have permission so I guess its ok.

Yesterday I got my website done. Yipeee and today I found out that I have to add in my sources so I'll have to wait until Monday to do that. I can't believe that we have just a week and a day left. I'm so sad because I feel like the time went by sooo fast. Everyone that I've met has been so nice and helpful and I just don't want to leave. Maybe next summer since I'll be looking for a job again I can try and come back here. The experience this summer has been so good and full of information. When I go down to school I can fill out an application for the library and say that I've worked in an academic library now. I really enjoyed this opportunity to begin working and in such a great environment. Full of helpful people and a great learning experience to do things you never thought you'd ever do. I'm just glad that I was hired and got the chance to experience it.

Well... today for me is a blue day because I found out last night that my dad made an appointment to take Moses in to be put to sleep. I've been kind of upset about that but I'm trying to keep busy so I don't think about it much. Now he's at peace which is a good thing because it would have been really bad if he stayed with us for another week and the tumor ruptured. So now he doesn't have to suffer anymore. We're sure going to miss him though. *tear tear*
The good news today though is tomorrow we're having our luncheon. I'm looking forward to it because I've never been to the South Dining Hall. I'm just suprised that we only have a little more than a week left. It feels like we just started work and were getting to know the library. I can't believe how fast the summer went! Anyway I guess I have to go.

The other day I finally got a laptop! Yeah! And the other good news is I'm almost done with my website. The two hours on Tuesday really went by slow it seemed so I really did get a lot done. I went from just a picture and my links to my photo page, resume, and home page done. All I have left is to add a couple more links and finish my biography. Whew I thought it was going to take much longer than that but luckily to get that far it only took two hours and I just need that one other study time next week and I should be good to go. Otherwise not much else is going on.

Today we looked for articles on our research topics. I didn't find much and what I did find it didn't have the articles or a very good description about my topic. But otherwise I did find some really good books to find research on. Oh well I'll just keep searching and hopefully I'll find something very soon.

We got the results back on Moses. He's very very sick in fact he has a very large tumor in his liver about the size of a grapefruit. The vet said that if we spent the couple of thousands of dollars on surgery it wouldn't prolong his life and keeping him at home to die would be inhumane because it would be a very slow and agonizing death. My dad brought him home yesterday and he will be with us for the remainder of the week so we can say goodbye. Moses is going to be scheduled to go back to the vets sometime next week so he can be put to sleep. Losing him is very hard for the family and he will never be forgotten. But we're going to miss him soo much. Home won't be the same without him around. But at least he won't be in anymore pain.

On Tuesday we took a trip to Valparaiso University. The car ride up was fun but in the back of my mind I was always thinking of Moses my families golden retriever. He went to the vet on the 17th and the vet wanted to keep him overnight for tests. Still have to wait and see what happened. But otherwise Valpo was very cool. My favorite part was lunch and the movie along with the tour of the chapel and the 3-d demo. Not muh more to say for now.

Well it's 9:00 in the morning and its thundering. I just called my college to confirm my email set up and in fact it does work! Yipee! We went to Chicago yesterday and I'll tell you the libraries were really interesting. Much like any other library there was a lot of interesting history about it and a ton of pretty architectural detail, paintings, and other cool things to look at. The Chicago Public Library was about as large as Notre Dame but was short a few levels. Everything was spread out so each floor had it's own couple of subjects like literature and music would be on a floor and then gov. docs. and periodicals would have it's own floor. The only difference between the Public and Notre Dame is the Public has a children's library. But otherwise they were both very similar. And one of the coolest things I've seen was their 10th floor which had an open area and when you look up they have a whole ceiling that are windows. So in the night you can see the stars and during the day you can see the sun and clouds. The Newberry was much smaller and not much different but had its own way of putting things together. They had a map room which was different and their preservation room was called a conservation room. But otherwise they had pretty much the same things as Notre Dame and the Public Library.

Today is just another normal day except it went by so slowly. Maybe that's because we're going to go to Chicago tomorrow. I'm finally at home and have to complete one more task before I can totally relax. I have to go pick up my mom. Otherwise before work I had to take her to work and drop off my little sister at soccer practice and then go to work. But i guess it isn't all that bad. I'm kind of debating on whether I should bring my portable dvd player since we are going to be on the bus for 2 hours. But then again it's just something else to carry around. I'll think about it. Anyway guess I got to get to bed early tonight so I can get up refreshed tomorrow. See ya!

Yesterday I went to the driving range with my mom and sister. I hit a bucket of balls and today I am definately feeling the effects. My arms are a little weak and my stomach muscles are a little sore. But otherwise I'm doing ok I guess. This morning I arrived on the 11th floor for my study time and I waited for Elaine to help me with my web page. She came and helped me out. I am very grateful because now I have links to some of my pages except one. I'll have to work on that. All I need to do now is fill out my resume, biography, pictures, and get my links and I'll be finished.
I know I didnt' blog yesterday so I'm making up for it today. I usually blog on Monday, Wednesday and Friday but I guess it doesn't matter as long as I get it done three times a week. I am definately getting hyped up on our field trip on Thursday and wondering what we are going to do on Friday for the Career Center so that keeps me wondering. But no matter what we do I bet it will be lots of fun.

Today I found a book that I find is very helpful in my research in training horses. Its called "Horsemastership; methods of training the horse and rider." The author is Margaret Cabell and the publisher is A. S. Barnes and was published in 1952. It teaches you the steps in training both the horse and rider which is very useful to me and my research. It starts with the basics of the weanling, to the young child's first lesson, to stable management, to beginning as an instructor, and finally advanced training steps. All these things seem very interesting especially if I wanted to start my own stables one day. I think this book will really help me in my upcoming days of research.

Today I went to lunch with Steve. It was fun talking about our past and seeing the art around part of the campus that he showed me. We had our webcourse class today and while writing my autobiography I got a headache. I haven't had a headache since 5th grade which is amazing. My autobiography so far is kind of like a story which I might change later thinking that the way I'm doing it now isn't the proper way to do a autobiography. So I'm not completely sure but oh well. Writing to me is so much fun. I'm not completely sure how long my autobiography will be so far if I keep it up the way I am now but I can tell you hadwritten so far it's three pages long very close to four. Ah well I guess it will be shorter typed right?
Funny story. My brother and sister came looking for me yesterday here at the library and they checked the main floor first and then the lower level and finally the second floor and didn't find me so they just left for home. But here's the funny part I wasn't even here I was over at preservation and had been since 7:45 a.m. So I was secretly laughing when my sister came to me and said we came looking for you but didn't find you at the library at 8:00 in the morning.

Today was a sad day :*( because preservation ended and on Friday 221 will end for me too. But I will have periodicals, cadm, gov docs, and reference to keep me busy though so that'll be good.
Today was nice and sunny compared to Monday which was gloomy and rainy. My 4rth of July Day was o.k. I got to sleep in and my mom, brother, sister, and my friend tried to go see the fireworks at the cove. But while we went to go pick him up at a quarter to ten that's when the fireworks were going on apparently. Oh well... we weren't the only ones there. A ton of other people were sitting there waiting too. Who knows how long though but we sat there for an hour hoping to see them. It's not the first time thought. Last year my mom, sister, brother, and I went to try and see if they were having the fireworks and the cove was dark and we thought that they didn't have a game so we just left and went home. But I had a fun 4rth of July anyway and I guess that's what counts. *lol*

Today is such a gloomy day. I was driving to preservations which is what I have on Monday and Wednesday at least until our schedules change and it was raining. So I thought ok maybe it will stop by the time I'm done and get to go to lunch four hours later. I get outside and it was still raining, not hard but still raining. I get to the parking lot and park my car and it starts pouring. I get out and try and get to the library as fast as I can but I end up getting soaked on the way. Then I realize that I have to walk to lunch too. *YUCK* Sitting at luch I tell everyone that I'm sitting with about what happened and they all told me that they got soaked too. So we're just sitting there and laughing hoping to warm ourselves up. We leave to go back to work half an hour later and get inside the library and its FREEZING! So as you can tell today was a bad day weather wise for just about everyone without an umbrella *lol*

The topics I looked up were reinforccement and learning on pages 471 and 336 hoping to find something about training horses. I didn't find much in the book so all that does is motivate me to look harder and find a different book and other sources. But it was a good idea and a good try. It does talk about how important reinforcment is and how different animals learn at different rates.

Well I'm just kind of sitting here so I thought I'd do my assignment. I found two sites that I think will be helpful so far in my research project. One is equisearch.com. I think this site will be helpful because it gives advice on caring for your horse, training, and other useful hints.
The other is horses-and-horse-information. I thought this would be another good site because it gives hints from the professionals on how to properly train your horse to do what you want. So I think that so far this early into the project those two sites will help me with my information and in the near future I will come across other helpful sites.

Today was a normal day. Not anything real different. I got my new schedule and I found out that I'm not going to have preservations or 221 anymore. *tear tear* I'm going to miss those hours. But when I go to college I'm going to miss the whole program and all the people in it more.
I really like preservation because I get to make pamphlets, boxes for brittle books, and duplicate barcodes. Part of preservation is working with your hands and I really enjoy doing things like that with tools and all.
I'm going to miss 221 because I'm going to miss everyone up there and working with them. But like I said when the program is over I'm going to miss everybody. But I guess that's part of the workforce right? Moving around to different departments and receiving new schedules. Well this program is a good experience overall. Trying new things and helping people, so it's a real pleasure helping my supervisors, meeting my mentor and others, and seeing what it's like to work.

Today starts a new week and I heard that next week we get new schedules. I know it's all part of the working environment but getting the new schedule after I just got used to this one is kind of making me nervous.
I'm really looking forward to our trip to Chicago. I think it will be a great experience and will be loads of fun. Going to Chicago and seeing some of the sights and going to the public library as well. Getting to know different libraries and seeing the difference between the others is a great experience I think because when I go to college I will have an idea on how to properly do research and find great sources and information. I'm really glad I have the chance to be involved with this summer program and get the chance to see what goes on behind the scenes at an academic library because it will be real beneficial in the future!

Today we learned the proper way to use google. I found it really helpful because it will hopefully help me to narrow my words down to main topics and hopefully I can find things quicker. I also found out that our schedules are going to change and we will have totally new ones. This week has gone by a little faster but I can't believe we're already into three weeks. It seems to go by so much faster than I thought it would. I can't wait to see what the future brings.

I'm beginning to feel more comfortable now that I'm into a week and a half at Notre Dame. Everybody's so nice and helpful when you don't understand something. I got my parking pass today so hopefully now I'll have a spot when I come to the library after Preservations. I really like everything I'm doing either at the library or at preservations because it keeps me busy and I feel like I need to stay busy to keep from getting bored like I would if I were at home for the whole summer. I never thought that I would have so much fun at work. I thought it would be doing the same thing day in and day out but moving around in the library and out at preservations is actually kind of fun. For one on the way to lunch and on the way back from preservations I get to be outside which I really enjoy because I feel couped up if I stay inside too long. I'm still not used to the breaks yet but I'm sure that further into the weeks I'll eventually get used to going on break. So what I've experienced so far with the job is fun for the most part. Can't wait to see what lies ahead!

Today we took a trip to the Medieval and IUSB libraries today and it was really fun to go see the other libraries in town. For one you can compare the IUSB and Notre Dame library and see how they structured there library and how we did it and see what we have compared to what they have and don't have.
At the Medieval Library it was really interesting to see all the copies of the manuscripts that they had. Some of the books had really pretty artwork inside and in the text. It was interesting to hear how long it took to make a book that was thicker in size and what the book was made out of. It was also cool to see a scroll and a couple of maps that they had there. So my personal experience to the Medieval Library was real enjoyable and I learned a lot about the history and the books.
The IUSB library was similar to ours in a couple different ways and then it was also different. The way it is different from Notre Dame is it doesn't have a preservation room. It also seemed like they designated a floor or part of a floor to periodicals, microforms, government documents, etc. Notre Dame has some government documents, periodicals, and microforms put together on one floor. The way they are similar is that they have a lot of the same things Notre Dame has down the line of periodicals, microforms, special collections, etc. In a way they both have their benefits. But my personal experience to the IUSB library was also enjoyable and I also learned a lot at that library as well. And it was different so that made it interesting as well.

I decided to choose training horses because in the spring when I'm at school as an equine studies student we get yearlings to train so I thought that it would be good to know a little about what to do before I actually get down there at Saint Mary of the Woods. So I don't spend half the year down there in the fall and then have spring rolls around and I wouldn't know what to do to start training the yearlings and risk myself getting kicked. The way I could narrow my topic is to learn how to start off training a horse or I could learn how to train a horse to jump because that's a type of training I'm also interested in.

the reason behind my blog name has a funny story behind it. I play girl's golf and at our end of the year award ceremony we have small breakout groups where each team would go to a different room and do individual awards. We went to our room and one of my team mates got up and announce funny awards that she did for everyone. When she got to me she said that I got the Jurassic Park Raptor Wannabe award for looking like a raptor when I jog through the golf course with my clubs on my back. The reason why I jog through the golf course is because if I feel like I'm falling behind or keeping holding someone else up I tend to jog to catch up or hurry myself along. So I guess I tend to lean forward when I jog.
